Our Story

For over 30 years Harald has been the continuation of a tradition that started more than a century ago, when a German family opened in 1903 Brazil’s first chocolate factory. The persistence in pursuing excellence in products and services led Harald to leadership positions in several market segments, through innovation, quality, a diverse portfolio, and pioneering. Harald has launched the first, more complete line of single origin chocolates, made with 100% Brazilian fine flavour cocoa. The company exports to over 30 countries and stands out among the main chocolate and compound producers in Latin America. It’s a sustainable company from cocoa to chocolate and it has in its DNA the drive to make better and with passion.
  • 1891

    Foundation of the Neugebauer Irmãos & Gerhardt company in Porto Alegre, to manufacture candies and cookies sold directly in the factory’s counter, through street vendors, and in bulk.
  • 1892

    First great bulk sale to the colonies in Rio Grande do Sul’s countryside and expansion of the factory after purchasing the first large machine from the Hartwig und Vogel Cocoa company.
  • 1894

    Arrival in Brazil of the entire Neugebauer family.
  • 1896

    Construction of the first building.
  • 1902

    Purchase of more adequate utensils and modern machines to expand the production of caramel and cookies. Start of chocolate manufacturing.
  • 1904

    Gold medal in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, in the United States.
  • 1904

    Expansion of the industrial building.
  • 1906

    Gold medal in the Milan International Exposition, in Italy.
  • 1908

    Gold medal in the Rio de Janeiro Exposition.
  • 1909

    First bill of sale issued to salesmen from the state of Santa Catarina.
  • 1914

    Conclusion of the work to expand the factory.
    Gold medal in the Universal Exhibition, in the United States.
    Gold medal in the Industrial Exposition, in Porto Alegre.

    New alliances to industrial expansion and change of corporate name to Ernesto Neugebauer & Cia.
  • 1982

    Foundation of Harald Indústria e Comércio de Alimentos Ltda. by Ernesto Harald Neugebauer, initiating the manufacture of compounds.

    Beginning of exports to over 30 countries.
    Launching of the first fractionate chocolate compound, distinguishable from the hydrogenated chocolate compounds in the market.
  • 1989

    Launching of the Harald Confeiteiro line.
  • 1990

    Beginning of exports to over 30 countries.
    Pioneer in the manufacture of chocolate compound callets, facilitating the home making of cake, bonbon and fine sweet coatings.

    Inauguration of the factory in Santana do Parnaíba.

    Launching of the Harald Cobertura Top line, with Harald’s proprietary formulation and production process – “S fractionate”.

    Definitive transfer of all production lines from Porto Alegre to Santana de Parnaíba.

    Launching of the Harald Raspar & Cobrir line.
  • 2001

    Launching of the Melken pure chocolate.
  • 2005

    Pioneer in the manufacture of chocolate callets in Brazil. ISO 9001 certification, granted by SGS ICS Certificadora Ltda.
  • 2007

    New identity and corporate signature.
  • 2008

    Acquisition of high technology production lines. ISO 22000 certification, granted by SGS ICS Certificadora Ltda.
  • 2009

    Launching of the culinary product line, segmented to the final consumer.
  • 2010

    Launching of the Melken Unique gourmet line, the most sophisticated and complete collection of chocolates with high cocoa content manufactured in Brazil.
  • 2012

    New identity and corporate signature in celebration of the 30th anniversary.
    Launching of the Harald Melken Doce Cozinha and Harald Melken Amor lines.
  • 2013

    Launching of Easter products to the final consumer.
    Launching of the Melken Unique – Fine Single Origin Cocoa line.
  • 2014

    Harald launches a new product category, the Harald Melken Inovare line.
  • 2015

    Harald becomes part of the Fuji Oil Group.
  • 2016

    Migration from ISO 22000 to FSSC 22000, a certification acknowledged by the GFSI and granted by SGS ICS Certificadora Ltda. Certificate of Halal production, granted by the certifying body SIILHALAL.
